Everest? Never Rest!

I am going to be writing about some old values, which have old words, like: ‘Perseverance’, ‘Resolute’, ‘Endeavour’, and ‘Fortitude’. (And, not surprisingly, all have been used to name ships in the Royal Navy down the years.)

This year sees the 60th Anniversary of the first successful ascent of Everest, summed up in an article in The Times with the words: “Perseverance, grit, optimism, patriotism, romance and national pride. The conquest of Everest in 1953 was a remarkable sporting achievement, but it also marked a cultural and historical peak, on the cusp between imperial and modern Britain.”

In terms of human achievement, personal character counts for so much and yet we, as individuals, neglect to develop those very qualities and attributes that can yield so much, not just for own personal development, but for what we actually achieve in our lives.

So, maybe it’s time to look at some of those attributes and work at making them part of who we are and how we approach life and work. Success comes to those who acquire some old-fashioned personal characteristics. Start with perseverance, become resolute in pursuit of every endeavour and develop fortitude in the face of adversity!

Here endeth the sermon!
