Successfully Conducting Oral Proceedings at the EPO

In-house & bespoke training

Oral proceedings are organised to conclude the majority of appeal cases, and in many opposition and examination cases. Consequently, a European patent attorney will almost certainly at some point have to attend oral proceedings, either to defend a client's invention or to attack a patent held by a competitor. To defend your client's interests correctly and competently it is vital to know what to expect at those occasions and to be property prepared for it.

Very relevant to point out the differences in the US audience (examiners, judges, jury) and the differences to European examiners. A lot of examples from court cases etc. Good, practical tips on how to find the golden mean when preparing a patent application that can work both in EP and in the US. Course content, presentation and speakers all amazing. An eye opener for anyone familiar with EP practice, but not so much with US practice (or vice versa) - avoiding ethnocentrism. Expert level course (ideal for me with 20 years EP experience). Very knowledgeable and experienced speakers who could pinpoint the trouble points for EP practitioners.

Lars Hald, Senior Patent Manager, Ambu A/S

A professional but also very open and informal approach, easy to interact and ask questions.

Kim Hed, Patent Specialist, Jotun AS

Overall opinion is that it was great. Interesting content, well presented, nice speakers that involved the audience. The level of difficulty and complexity was spot on for me, I knew about some things beforehand, but new information was scattered throughout which always kept things interesting.

Per Görts, Patent Consultant, Ström och Gulliksson

[Speakers were] Energetic and willing to share their knowledge and professional experience. Created a good atmosphere which made possible the attendees to intervene. The speakers always took the best from their audience and incorporated in the flow of the lesson.
The content was very well organized to include all the important aspects of EPC and the case law seemed easy to understand.
The speakers were very focused and insisted on the important aspects, not only for those preparing for the EQE, but business view.

Rita Noronha, Patent Manager, BIAL – Portela & Cª, S.A.

My aim was to get an understanding of the difference of a "normal" and a software patent and I think the course covered that excellently.

Siim Kinnas, Intellectual Property Advisor, Estonian Business and Innovation Agency

The content, the presentation and the speaker were very good. All topics were presented in a clear manner.

MARIA LUISA MARCHESI, Italian Patent Attorney, Eni SpA

A very good webinar overall and felt very worthwhile. I am really glad that I attended. After the first day the sessions were livelier, and the polls added a little extra dimension to recap and tease out some of the points made in the presentations. The discussion between the EU and US based presenters on points of divergence worked really well and made the sessions less static and more engaging.

Angela King, Patent Attorney, Croda Europe Limited

Very compact but still fairly informative course with excellent speakers.

Matti Juhani Pasanen, European patent attorney, Sika Patent Attorneys

I have obtained knowledge about some of the rules for drafting the claims for EP and USA patent applications as well as different aspects on both procedures.

Monica Teresa Bortolan , Patent Attorney IPM/Patenting, ENI CORPORATE UNIVERSITY SPA

The speaker was very cooperative in answering questions during all the presentations

Annarita Aversa, Legal Counsel, Ferrero International
